Our mission is to protect Montana's wilderness heritage, quiet beauty, and outdoor traditions, now and for future generations. Our vision is a future in which pristine public lands in Montana are permanently protected as federally designated Wilderness.

Since 1958, the spirited people of Montana Wilderness Association have worked tirelessly to protect Montana's wilderness, wildlife habitat, and traditional recreation opportunities.

MWA members were instrumental in the passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964, and subsequently led the fight to win designation or virtually every Wilderness area in the state, including the Scapegoat, Anaconda-Pintler, Absaroka-Beartooth, Rattlesnake, Lee Metcalf, Great Bear, and Welcome Creek, as well as Wild and Scenic designations for the Flathead and Missouri Rivers.

MWA also helped win Wild and Scenic designations for the Missouri and Flathead rivers, and National Monument status for the Upper Missouri River Breaks.

Montana Wilderness Association is the largest grassroots organization in Montana with over 5500 members. Our membership is organized into local Chapters in Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena and Kalispell.

MWA has staff and offices in Helena, Great Falls, Choteau, Kalispell  and Livingston.  A volunteer State Council, elected by the membership, sets strategy and direction for the organization.
