The Northeast Wilderness Trust (NWT) is the only regional land trust dedicated exclusively to preserving and promoting wilderness. Since its inception in 2002, NWT has protected over 6,500 acres in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine by working with private land owners and conservation partners to permanently protect lands as wild through the use of conservation easements, outright acquisition, and other methods.

Project Update

NWT has entered a Purchase and Sale Agreement with Prentiss and Carlisle Paper Company to buy 1,400 acres of riverfront wilderness along the Piscataquis River in Central Maine, know as Piscataquis Preserve.  This beautiful property contains one of the largest mature stands of American Chestnut trees in North America, and upper reaches of the Piscataquis serve as vital spawning grounds for Atlantic Salmon.  Additionally, this property abuts 1,400 acres of wilderness, known as the Alder Stream Preserve, that NWT purchased in 2005, thus the Piscataquis Preserve acts as a critical habitat linkage for large breeding mammals and encourages preservation of life-sustaining ecosystem services.
